On a cold and blustery Sunday morning last month, eight intrepid trustees gathered at Tower Bridge to begin an 8.5-mile walk across eleven Thames bridges, concluding at Chelsea Bridge. The walk was part of a fundraising initiative and it drew an unexpected but deeply welcome show of support.

Joining the group was His Excellency Mbelwa Kairuki, Tanzania’s High Commissioner to the UK, who had volunteered to accompany the trustees as soon as he heard about the event. To our great pleasure and slight surprise, he was joined by Ambassador Thobias Makoba, Director of Global Strategies and Geopolitics in the administrative capital, Dodoma. Until December last year, he was the chief spokesperson for the President of Tanzania.

After a few photos at Tower Bridge, the group set off — only to glimpse five more Tanzanians striding purposefully toward us. They were staff members from the High Commission, eager to be part of the walk. And there were still more to come…

As the group approached Waterloo Bridge, we were joined by another distinguished guest: Said Yakubu, Ambassador to the Comoros. Having flown into London that morning, Ambassador Yakubu brought with him a rich personal history — now based in East Africa, he had once lived in the UK and worked for several years with the Swahili branch of the BBC World Service. His son, a recent graduate of Nottingham Trent University, accompanied him.

The day ended with a delicious lunch at Honorary President Nigel Fawkes’ home, where the High Commissioner recorded a heartfelt video message for staff and children in Tanzania. All of us successfully completed the walk, although some had sore hips and stiff legs the following day!

We are so grateful to all our supporters who sponsored our walk. In total, we raised £14,000, which is enough to feed everyone in the Children’s Village for six months.

Meanwhile, in Tanzania...
<<First Name>>, while trustees braved London’s wind and drizzle, the children were enjoying a much sunnier adventure. After the mid-year school break, all 81 children from the Children’s Village returned to school, but not before a special day out at the Indian Ocean.

Two coaches carried them to the beach, where they spent the day swimming in the sea and playing football on the sand. For some, it was their first glimpse of the ocean — and their joy was unmistakable.

At the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam, a small reunion recently brought together several young adults who had grown up with Malaika Kids. Two are now working in a nearby factory, one with a fumigation company, and others have found roles as a driver, a hairdresser, and a carpenter, each of them now fully independent.

But the Reception Home remains, above all, a refuge for abandoned and maltreated children. The Welfare Department recently asked us to care for an eleven-year-old boy who was found selling eggs on the street. He had been sleeping in a makeshift shelter — a stark reminder of the vulnerability many children face.

He is now safe and receiving the care and support he needs.
