Children's Village

The History

In 2005, a 30-acre plot of land was acquired just outside Mkuranga, a town 30 miles south of Dar es Salaam. The location offered affordable land, open space for children to play, and ground for growing crops—an ideal setting for creating a sustainable, child‑centred community.

The village was uniquely designed and constructed in stages to meet the needs of the children who would live there. The layout includes family‑sized dormitories, washrooms, classrooms, a central kitchen, and a small library. Two large, open‑sided halls form the heart of the village, providing shared dining space and a safe area for children to play during the rainy season.

It was officially opened in July 2010 at a nationally televised ceremony led by former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi and attended by more than 250 guests. Since then, the project has twice been awarded the prestigious ‘Order of Uhuru Torch’ in recognition of its innovative contribution to social development in Tanzania.

A Thriving Community

Today, the village provides a safe and nurturing home for 80 children. They live in family units of ten, each supported by a resident mother who ensures the children are healthy, well cared for, and engaged in their studies. Daily life is centred around shared meals, routines, and the stability of a family environment.

One of the resident mothers is a trained nurse, and all children are covered by health insurance. We maintain a close partnership with Mkuranga Hospital, and a retired GP based in the UK offers medical guidance to support the children’s well-being.
