Easter was a particularly joyful occasion for Malaika Kids this year.

Easter Celebrations

The celebrations began with an Easter egg hunt for the pre‑primary children. As soon as the small eggs were hidden, the children were sent off to search—any delay and the chocolate would have melted in the hot sun. Larger eggs were given to the younger primary pupils, but only after they had answered a simple maths question.

A Surprise for the Mothers

Earlier in the morning, Francesca had arranged with Monica, the Village Manager’s wife, to bake a surprise cake for the mothers.

Before presenting it, Francesca gave a short speech in Kiswahili, thanking them for their hard work, patience, and the love they show their children every day.

A Special Lunch and Dancing

A special lunch of chicken and chips was cooked for everyone—chicken is a rare treat and, because of the cost, is limited on the menu to once a month.

After the meal, the children burst into enthusiastic renditions of the ‘Macarena’. One of our older boys—an excellent dancer—had taught them the moves…

and they mastered them with impressive speed.

Welcoming Back Our Graduates

In the afternoon, we were joined by nine very special visitors: three young women and six young men who grew up in the Children’s Village and to continue their studies, moved to the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam. Now, they all have jobs: one is a teacher, another is a carpenter, and another is a qualified pharmacist.

Some of them joined the dancing before taking part in a Q&A session with students preparing to move to the Reception Home next year. Helping these students choose courses they enjoy and can succeed in is essential, and we are becoming increasingly effective in guiding them through these important decisions.

Back in the UK

Francesca and I are now back in the UK—missing the warmth but certainly appreciating the absence of mosquitoes!
