Our Christmas Appeal closed on Christmas day and our target was £50,000. In a very special year, we have received an amazing mind-blowing £100,000. All of us at Malaika Kids (and I hope you) are pleasantly surprised – here’s how the appeal unfolded.
First of all, we gathered in pledges from our UK (and US) trustee body; that gave us £25,000 of money to match donations with.
Secondly, our donor base responded magnificently; nearly £18,000 came in via the JustGiving Christmas Appeal page, and this brought with it nearly £4,000 in Gift Aid. Off-line donations via CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) Bank and cheques amounted to over £7,000. That provided £29,000. Coupled with our initial pledges, we were so happy to have hit our target. But then…
During the campaign, one very generous trust fund said they were prepared to donate £20,000 if we could find matched pledges. This was a major challenge!
So, we approached a variety of significant former donors to see if they would help provide matching pledges in order to take advantage of the unexpected ‘extra’ £20,000. We found 8 regular supporters (not trustees) who were willing to jointly pitch in £22,000. In addition, we estimate the Gift Aid applicable to all of the pledged funds to total £5,000.
And, that’s how the grand total became £100,000!
We are extremely grateful to all 81 donors who contributed to the appeal. These donations ranged from £10 to £20,000. Some donors and trust funds were exceptionally generous this year, and we are very grateful. A BIG thank you to all those who supported this Christmas Appeal.
However, we must not get carried away with our success. Our budgeted spend in Tanzania for next year is £282,000, an extra £20,000 more than this year – more children to look after, an improved diet, and teenagers costing more to educate in further education.
At the same time, Tanzania is not in a good place with Covid. Only 2% of the population is vaccinated. We worry that the care-givers in Dar es Salaam (who are generally a very old relative, as pictured below) may be adversely affected by Covid, potentially pushing many more children into permanent care in the Children's Village.

Nevertheless, we can face 2022 with confidence in our financial resources to see us through for the next year and beyond. Our staff welcomes the opportunity to keep helping the children.
