Our Children’s Village is full of chat and laughter as all 34 primary school children, plus 17 secondary school boarders, return for the December holidays. And our nursery school children have been busy drawing their favourite animals - see below for two of the most interesting attempts!

We have ten children who will enter their final year of primary school this coming January. We are hopeful that almost all of them will do sufficiently well in their national exams to go on to secondary education. With this in mind, James, the Village Manager, will ensure that some creative writing takes place during the break. Each child will write an essay entitled, “Choose your favourite animal and describe a day in its life.”

The secondary school children have a more demanding topic. “Choose your favourite period of Tanzanian history. Does it have lessons for the country today?” All secondary school teaching is in English, so we are looking forward to reading some stimulating essays.
However, there is time for more than studying. The shorter period of rain (called Vuli which happens November to mid-January) has at last arrived, over a month late. The week before it came the temperature mid-afternoon hit 49 degrees Centigrade and our crops (and people) were really suffering! Now the temperature is back to the mid-thirties and at long last we can plant the saplings we ordered back in October. Cashew nuts, guava, coconuts and banana trees do well in this climate and should provide us with valuable nutrition in the years to come.

This week James has arranged two holiday trips for everyone at the Village, including the mothers. They’ll walk a forest trail and then go on to the seaside. Some of the older children would have liked a trip to the National Museum in Dar es Salaam but this must be delayed until the news on Covid becomes more positive.
Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all those of you who have already donated to our Christmas Appeal. It’s going very well and doesn’t close until Christmas Day, so there’s still time for those of you who have not yet had the chance to give…
