Malaika Kids UK has now issued its Annual Report and Accounts for 2020. You can view it here.

One of the main purposes of the AGM on May 11 (5.30 pm) is for trustees to share this report, and to answer questions on it from Members and supporters. If you would like to receive your Zoom invitation, please contact me at alan.edwards@malaika-kids.org Taken as a whole, 2020 was a good year for Malaika Kids. We were able to care for more children in our Children’s Village and in the Relatives Support Programme – we now support a total of 174 children.

At the same time, our children are getting higher marks at school and the older children are getting jobs (if not very grand) when they leave us. Ultimately, they are in a far better situation than they would have been without our nurture and care. Our aim is always to enable our Malaika children to make the most of their education and abilities and to contribute positively to society. Our Reception Home continues to be used as a safe haven for children that Welfare desperately need to house, albeit sometimes temporarily.

Covid-19 has, of course, been a major concern. For some months the children were unable to go to school and were ‘home schooled’ by us. And there has been no serious health issue for any of our children or staff so far. Sadly one of our supporters, a carpenter who made desks for the local Primary school and trained up two of our children, did die of “pneumonia.” Former President Magufuli died of a Covid-related illness in March 2021. He was immediately succeeded by his Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, the first woman to hold the post.

On April 7th, it was reported that: “Tanzania's new president appears to be taking a new, scientific approach to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.” She has already formed a task force to advise her on the scope of infections in the country and how to combat it effectively. COVID-19 is “not something we should be quiet about or refuse flatly or accept without doing a scientific examination. We will do medical research which will tell us the scope of the problem and advise us about what the world is recommending as well as our own expertise,” she said. Given the rate of increase in covid deaths in India and in Brazil, we hope that Tanzania will develop and implement strong Covid policies as soon as possible. Finally, I have to report that the income of Malaika Kids UK in 2020 was down £40,000 on the prior year, largely due to the effects that the Covid pandemic had on fundraising. We are budgeting to spend £260,000 in Tanzania this year. So we are glad that we also have friends in the Netherlands, the US, and in Tanzania who contribute, allowing our reserves overall to remain broadly stable. The outlook is fine, providing we can get through Covid-19 and its variants! With best wishes and hoping to see you on Zoom.
