Dear <<First Name>>

As I said last month, at Malaika Kids we believe that living with a family member within the community is the best outcome for any child. Our priority is, if possible, to reunite a child with a family member.
Care in the Community
Our unique Relatives Support Programme aims to provide hope, a safe home, and education to the poorest children in Dar es Salaam. At £300 per child annually, we currently support 126 children aged from 5 to 17 who attend 44 different schools. Mama K and Mama Amina are responsible for monitoring the well-being of the children enrolled in the Relatives Support Programme.

Participating children receive a mandatory school uniform and essential educational supplies. Through the bimonthly food and hygiene packages, we ensure that each child receives adequate nutrition. Additionally, we provide each child with individual health insurance or, if needed, directly cover the cost of prescriptions.
Transforming the Lives of Children
Following are a few of the children’s stories. In keeping with our strict Safeguarding Policy, we do not share individual names.

One girl who attends Mwongozo primary school is an orphan now cared for by her aunt, her deceased mother’s elder sister. Ramadhan, our social worker who knows her well, says, “She is a well-behaved, gentle, and quiet child. She is not very talkative unless encouraged to speak.”

Without the food package she receives, she would often go without meals. Although her family owns their home—reducing the risk of homelessness—daily life remains a struggle, and the support she receives from us is essential to her well-being.
Another girl, aged eleven, is also an orphan, and in this case, she is looked after by her elderly, frail grandmother. The grandmother earns a meagre income collecting used plastic water bottles and selling them to recycling agents by the kilogram. She is often unwell, and her granddaughter frequently skips school to care for her.
One boy attending Majani ya Chai primary school lives with his HIV-positive mother, who also suffers from fragile mental health. Her own mother lives with them as well, and they spend most of their time scavenging rubbish to sell for a small amount. Despite these hardships, the boy’s academic performance is adequate, and he can read and write in Kiswahili.

Another child we support is an eight‑year‑old boy who now lives with his grandmother. His father left before he was born, and although his mother cared for him briefly after birth, she later brought him to her own mother and then disappeared. She has not been seen since.

After school, he often spends his afternoons playing in the streets until evening, with no adult available to guide him through his homework.
Mama K and Mama Amina do their best to support these children, visiting their teachers and checking on their well-being when they collect their food parcels. There is little doubt that their intervention has an enormous positive impact.
The need for our services is endless; with our limited resources, we do everything we can. To work more efficiently, we are exploring ways to place more children in fewer schools, which will reduce the travel time for the mamas and allow them to work more effectively.

With your continued help, we will be able to support more children within their community.
With grateful thanks,
