Malaika Kids Tanzania cares for 130 children, from infants to 17-year-olds, through the Relatives Support Programme (RSP), which is administered from the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam. The RSP children are placed in the loving care of a relative, who is often a grandmother, within their community. From the age of six, these children attend state primary schools in the city. Thanks to your generosity, we provide the mandatory uniforms, books, and stationery that enable them to attend school, where they can learn and thrive.

We are committed to supporting the RSP children for a further four years while at state secondary school, ensuring every child has the best chance to build a brighter future.

A Rising Star We have always emphasised that if a child shows significant academic promise, we will try to assist them more proactively. Our RSP coordinators have identified such a child, who, despite having a very ill mother and a largely absent father, manages to achieve an almost perfect A grade at school against all odds. To give him the best chance to succeed, we are sending him to a state boarding school at an additional cost of £150 per year. There, he can focus on his studies and in due course become a great help, supporting his parents and younger siblings by obtaining a well-paid job.

A New Tourist Guide Another success story is of a young adult who has just completed three years of study to become an accredited tourist guide. He speaks excellent English, has learned basic French, and is among just 133 to reach Level 3 in Mandarin. He has been honoured with a certificate from the Chinese Embassy; he is now very eager to welcome Chinese visitors and share the beauty of Tanzania.

Celebrating Milestones This year marks 15 years of Malaika Kids Tanzania. During the 1990s, Najma Manji (pictured centre, wearing yellow) undertook the care of six abandoned children by welcoming them into her home. This action laid the foundation for the Malaika Kids charity, which began with the rental of a modest building and a vision for future expansion. What started as a small Reception Home with space for just twelve children has grown into something extraordinary!

Today, Malaika Kids supports over 230 children—whether in the community, the Children’s Village, or the Reception Home—thanks to the dedication of our permanent staff and the generosity of supporters like you.

Many of the children who grew up in our Children’s Village and Reception Home are now finding partners, getting married, and starting their own families. Frequently, the boys will come to Najma Manji to ask for her blessing before marriage. Sometimes, after the ceremony, we host a small reception at the Reception Home to celebrate their new beginnings.
