Lessons are an hour long and include the topics usually covered in UK schools. However, a recent addition to the curriculum is an hour of Mandarin every week. The Chinese influence is growing fast in Tanzania and many small businesses in both Dar es Salaam and Mkuranga are now run by Chinese owners.
Unfortunately, not all children can attend Ujenzi. Sometimes we take in older children who have never been to school; they arrive at the Village both illiterate and innumerate. These children attend Mkuranga primary, a state-run school which despite large class sizes has a strong Special Education programme. Here, they receive tailored support to catch up before joining mainstream classes. Currently, 10 of our children are enrolled at Mkuranga primary, making steady progress toward literacy and numeracy.

Francesca and I are visiting the children in November and will check how they are doing. Our itinerary, of course, will include visits to the schools we currently use.
It costs around £15,000 per year to educate all our primary-aged children. Our Christmas Appeal launches in five weeks, running from 25 November to 25 December. During this time, your donations will be doubled, enabling you to make twice the impact.
