Happy New Year to you! View in your browser Dear <<First Name>> I am delighted to report that our Christmas Appeal was a great success. We raised a total of £74,000, slightly less than the £82,000 raised in 2023. But given the increased turmoil in the world and the calls for charitable donations from so many worthy causes, we feel very fortunate that thanks to you, our Christmas Appeal raised 90% of its target. Donations ranged from £10 to £10,000 and we are grateful for each and every one of them. I have tried to thank you personally. While I have not been able to write to those who gave anonymously, all these donations are extremely helpful in providing long term support to our children in Tanzania. All our children had a happy lead-up to Christmas. The day trip to the Indian Ocean has become an annual event and the mothers were up before dawn preparing a picnic for 81 children and 10 adults. Two coaches made the 90-minute drive to the seaside where the water is clear and like a warm bath to swim in. For those who could swim, piggy in the middle was very popular, while on the beach sandcastles were built and football was played.  On Christmas Day the US team at the Maritime Security Centre kindly sent Christmas presents to our Reception Home. And on Boxing Day the 5-star Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam invited one hundred (yes, you read that right!) of our children to lunch and celebrations, including dancing, Father Christmas, and hand and face painting. All of our Reception Home children attended, along with 20 from the Children’s Village and many from our Relatives Support Programme. As you can see, a great time was had by all. We look forward to another successful year for Malaika Kids. Ton Willemsen, the Chair of Malaika Kids Netherlands, will visit in March to focus on maintenance and improvements to our infrastructure. Dr Simon Cooper, a trustee of Malaika Kids UK, will visit in June to check on the children and advise on health issues, and Francesca and I will go for one month towards the end of the year to concentrate on education and job prospects for the children.
