How is our income spent?   View in your browser Dear <<First Name>> We look after a lot of children. Currently, there are 78 at the Children’s Village in Mkuranga, 25 living in the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam – most of whom are taking training courses – and 115 helped in the community with food, uniforms and medical insurance through our unique Relatives Support Programme. In total, we are caring for 218 children. You can imagine how expensive this is, and it’s why we depend upon your financial support to continue providing care. Our Christmas Appeal will be kicking off in exactly one month on November 25 and we hope that you will contribute to help with our costs. This year we expect to spend about 862 million Tanzanian shillings. At an exchange rate of TZS 3,560 to £1, that amounts to a very significant £242,000. Our biggest single expenditure is for staff. We employ a total of 26 local people. We need enough mamas to look after the children 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including cover for holidays. We also employ a small number of farm workers, a caretaker, and an in-house pre-primary teacher. This year the total payroll cost is expected to be £71K. That means we are paying our staff on average £2,700 a year before tax. Some senior staff are paid above this level, and others less. They offer incredible value for money and do an amazing job with the children, often going above and beyond their contractual obligations in the time and the care they provide. Our second biggest outlay is on food. £58,000 a year covers all the meals for children, as well as for live-in staff.  To keep the food bills low, there is much reliance on the staple ugali – made from maize and with the consistency of mashed potato. Flavour and protein mostly come from kidney beans. We grow fresh greens at the Village, and they are included in the daily menu. Meat, chicken, or fish are a relatively rare treat, while locally grown nutritious pineapple is a regular dessert. The third largest expense is education. This costs us £55,000 a year. We pay a significant amount to have our primary school children taught in English in small classes at a private school, rather than in Kiswahili at the local government school where class sizes are over 100. Secondary school, as is common in Tanzania, is boarding and fee-paying. Training courses in Dar es Salaam are all fee-paying. Since youth unemployment is high, and we can’t use family networks to find jobs, education is therefore extremely important and the only way for our children to succeed in life. We are very proud that our first qualified accountant will graduate this November, with another about to do so in social work. A qualified pharmacist is currently undertaking work experience which should lead to a full-time job. After these major expenses, we need a further £58,000 a year to cover all the other costs, which include clothes, water and electricity, cleaning and washing, health and hygiene, farm expenses, keeping vehicles on the road, and local auditing and legal services.
