Christmas Appeal success

We are very pleased to announce that the final total for our Christmas Appeal was a magnificent £81,482, our second highest ever. Given the many deserving causes and rising tides of war, we are delighted and very grateful that our supporters have remained loyal and, in many cases, have even increased their donations to Malaika Kids. Our budget for 2024 in Tanzania has now been finalised at £280,000, 75% of which will be spent on food, salaries and education, so the appeal funds get us off to a terrific start!

As you may know, we support 115 children in the community in Dar es Salaam through our Relatives Support Programme, where we provide much-needed food packages, health insurance and school uniforms. These RSP children generally live with a relative, most often a grandmother, and without your help would most likely be living on the streets, abandoned and unsupported.

Just before Christmas, Jasmine, one of our supporters, flew out from London to Dar es Salaam. She had been fundraising and raised enough money, mainly through her mosque, to be able to provide presents for every single one of these children. Every child received an appropriate book with matching English and Swahili stories. In addition, the younger children got a simple puzzle, older children Lego or a sewing kit, and the oldest children received a watch or jewellery. For many of these children these were the first Christmas presents they had ever received.

Jasmine is a dentist so she could examine the teeth of many of the children. She reported that they were generally in good condition. However, some of the younger children needed to brush their teeth more thoroughly – we provide toothbrushes and toothpaste as part of the food package – and some of the older children had wisdom teeth coming through, which was painful.

We have several supporters like Jasmine, who raise funds for Malaika Kids in innovative ways. Our annual Royal Parks Half Marathon raised over £5,000 net last year, and this year we are expanding our repertoire with a cycle race – if you are interested please email Martin Stoll martin.stoll@malaika-kids.org for more details. Another supporter, Abigail, has raised funds by running five kilometres a day for the whole of December, while Rebecca has organised tennis tournaments. All of these initiatives have raised funds to help support the children. We are so grateful to all of them. With very best wishes for the new year.
