Christmas time - all change

In Tanzania, the school year ends in December and the new academic year will start in January. This means that 17 of our boys and girls will start at different schools or colleges in the New Year. Hopefully, they will easily integrate and make new friends.

Two six-year-old boys will transfer from our nursery class to Lifewaylight, the fee-paying English medium school just two minutes’ walk from our village door. They know their letters and numbers, can read simple sentences in both English and Swahili and are used to speaking English. We hope they will settle well at their new school. Ten children took the Standard 7 exam in September in readiness for most to move on to secondary school. The results are out, and we are pleased to say that all passed this exam, most very well with a B, and two with a C. Nine of these children will go on to fee-paying English medium schools, while the tenth is keen to learn carpentry at Don Bosco College in Dar es Salaam. He came to us two years ago as a 13-year-old who had rarely attended school and spoke no English. Although he has improved enormously, he is not academic, and we are confident that Don Bosco is the right place for him.

Similarly, we care for an older girl who also came to us as a teenager with a background of deprivation and maltreatment. She has been accepted onto a mechanics course at the army training centre in Dar es Salaam. The course is taught mainly in Swahili and is highly regarded in the community.

Four of our children have completed four years at secondary school, and their O-Level results are due in February. Having seen their mock results, we are fairly confident of their abilities, and we plan that they will all move to the Reception Home in Dar es Salaam. One will take an IT course aiming to achieve a diploma in 3 years’ time, two will undertake vocational training at Don Bosco College, and one will study to become a primary school teacher.

We are very proud of every single one of these children and look forward to watching their progress over the next few years.
