Our Christmas Appeal is up and running! Malaika Kids has no governmental support either in the UK or in Tanzania; the lifeblood of our operation is the result of small donations typically made around Christmas when your donation will be doubled. Your donation will help children in our Children’s Village, our Relatives Support Programme, and our Reception Home. Today, I want to update you on news from the Reception Home.

At present 16 children and young adults (seven girls and nine boys) live in the Reception Home in Kinondoni, a very poor area of Dar es Salaam. They range in age from six months to 22 years. Most of the older children are attending a wide range of apprenticeship and college courses. Three are training to be carpenters; one found the training course too demanding but is now doing very well undertaking work experience at a carpenter’s shop. Others that we are delighted with are doing courses relating to supply management, law, freight clearing, hairdressing, accountancy, and pharmaceutical studies.

We are particularly proud that one girl, after successfully completing her diploma, has now started on her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. She is the first of our Malaika Kids to come this far academically, and will certainly not be the last!

Over the course of the year, we have been asked by Social Services to act as a temporary guardian for several vulnerable children - 13 in the past twelve months - some of whom stay with us and some of whom return to their extended families. Currently, we are caring for a six-month-old child who has been abandoned, not for the first time, by her impoverished and unwell mother. Social Services are working on her case and in the meantime, she is receiving an enormous amount of care and attention from our resident mamas and the older girls. She will either move back home, probably to stay with a responsible relative, or if that is not possible she will move to our Children’s Village for long-term care and education.

In addition to housing children who are new to Malaika Kids and older teenagers in training, the Reception Home is where we run most of our Relatives Support Programme. It is also where we have our main office. It’s relatively small in space (which is why we prefer that most children move to the Children’s Village at the appropriate time), and it’s an area surrounded by a high wall that provides safety for the children and staff.

£120 pays for work experience for a year for one child.
Apprenticeship courses start at £500 a year and college courses that involve boarding are just over £1,000 a year.
