Magnificent... - Malaika Kids UK

On a sunny cold day last month, 15 of our runners took part in the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise much-needed funds to support the work in Tanzania. There were a further 20 eager supporters, including four trustees. This run was cancelled last year due to Covid restrictions, and we are delighted to be once again involved in what for us has become a regular event.

There were 14,000 participants in total, from all around the world, and our total of 15 was the highest we have managed yet. And they all finished! We could not get a picture of everyone together as the race took place in 4 stages; but I hope you can get a feel for the glorious atmosphere and the sense of achievement. The run passes through Hyde Park, Green Park, Buckingham Palace and St James’s Park. We are confident of at least as high a turnout next year. It is not too early to let Martin Stoll know that you would like to be involved in 2022, please contact him at martin.stoll@malaika-kids.org Most importantly, after all expenses such as mandatory fees to the RPHM organisers, we raised a net sum of just over £10,000 - again, our best yet. To all the participants a big THANK YOU!

Of course, our major fundraising event of the year is still to come. From 25 November-25 December we will be organising our annual Christmas Appeal, again with matched funding, largely from trustees. This means that for every contribution that you make, we will double it. Once again we are hoping to break the £50,000 barrier; this is very important to us as it provides a third of our annual funding. As a brief reminder of what we do:

We support 94 children in our Relatives Support Programme (up from 89 last year).
We look after and pay for training courses for 16 children in our Reception Home (up from 13 last year).
We care for 76 children in our Children’s Village (up from 72 last year).
Over the year we have temporarily looked after an additional 9 children in the Reception Home while longer-term solutions were found.

It has been a tough year in Tanzania, with real incomes falling and Covid infections and deaths accelerating. Four of our staff caught Covid and one sadly died. We continue to worry that more and more children may lose their caregivers and need our help. Yet morale is high and we are so happy to be able to stay in touch via Skype and WhatsApp. Sometime next year we hope to return to Tanzania and be able to see the progress made, thanks largely to our wonderful staff, led superbly by Najma and Shezan Manji and James Kalinga.
